What is Happening

Sometime between 8:30 p.m. and 1 a.m. Jace was shaken so hard that it caused a subdural hematoma.  There is a criminal investigation, so I think I have to use restraint, but after years of working as a Social Worker and advocating for children, I never thought this type of evil would directly affect my family.

Jace is now in the PICU at St. Francis Children's hospital.  He is in a medically induced coma and we are waiting for the swelling in his brain to go down.  The Dr. is not optimistic, but we believe God hears our cries for help and comes to our aid.  We believe that the same power that raised Christ Jesus from the dead works in Jace right now.  We believe that God has a plan for Jace's life that does not include being murdered.  We believe that God heals.  We believe in miracles.

Favorite quote from Jace:  "I'm a child of God."

If you know me, you know that I write to deal with life.  This is the only way I could think of to channel the overwhelming pain of this nightmare.  Please pray for Jace.  Please send this blog to everyone you know and ask them to pray for Jace.  I will be posting updates about his condition and other information as it comes.

For those of you that don't know Jace, he was born on June 5, 2007 at 25 weeks.  He weighed less than 2 pounds, and was not expected to live. His mother had had numerous other children taken from her custody.  She used meth while pregnant with Jace, and could not identify Jace's father.   My sister Leslie was his nurse.  We had discussed being foster parents in the past, and decided to take Jace.  Life was hard.  The first night he was with us, I thought he was going to die in my arms.  He made it though, and has grown into the most delightful, wonderful, adorable human being in the universe.  He has truly made life worth living for all of us, and I can't imagine life without him.  I lived with Jace and raised him along with my sister until two weeks ago when I moved into a separate house and her boyfriend moved in.  That was hard for me.  This is a million times worse.

Right now there is swelling in his brain.  The swelling is treated with  medication, but they expect it will get worse before it will get better.  The hope is that they can keep it under control with medication until it goes down on its own.  Until then, it cannot be determined how the injuries have affected his brain as far as brain damage or if there is brain activity. So for the next 48 hours it is just a waiting game.

Please pray.  Please get others to pray.  Jace deserves another miracle.

Please forgive any typos or incoherence.  Im a little out of it.

You can leave comments on the blog.  I have also added a guest book where you can write notes to Jace and we will read them out loud to him.

  2. Psalm 62.

    1 My soul finds rest in God alone;
    my salvation comes from him.

    2 He alone is my rock and my salvation;
    he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.

    3 How long will you assault a man?
    Would all of you throw him down—
    this leaning wall, this tottering fence?

    4 They fully intend to topple him
    from his lofty place;
    they take delight in lies.
    With their mouths they bless,
    but in their hearts they curse.
    Selah

    5 Find rest, O my soul, in God alone;
    my hope comes from him.

    6 He alone is my rock and my salvation;
    he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.

    7 My salvation and my honor depend on God [a] ;
    he is my mighty rock, my refuge.

    8 Trust in him at all times, O people;
    pour out your hearts to him,
    for God is our refuge.
    Selah

    9 Lowborn men are but a breath,
    the highborn are but a lie;
    if weighed on a balance, they are nothing;
    together they are only a breath.

    10 Do not trust in extortion
    or take pride in stolen goods;
    though your riches increase,
    do not set your heart on them.

    11 One thing God has spoken,
    two things have I heard:
    that you, O God, are strong,

    12 and that you, O Lord, are loving.
    Surely you will reward each person
    according to what he has done.

  5. May our God hear our prayers and heal Jace, bringing the swelling down and allow his body to completely recover from this assault on his little person.

    May the family draw together with love and with hope and with all good thoughts and positive feelings, building one another up and drawing from energy they didn't know they had.

  7. I am hoping for a miracle for your sweet Jace. My son, born 5/28/07, had massive amounts of bleeding on his brain at 5 months of age. He was in a very similar situation to Jace. My son made it through after a long month in PICU. He has developmental delays now, but he is here and in my arms, and he is happy. That's all that matters. Here is a link to my blog (all about my son's journey) eliahjames.blogspot.com. I hope and pray that all is well and you have peace in your heart. Please feel free to contact me if you need an ear.

  24. Jace,
    With all that I am, I know that nothing can separate us from the love of God. All is alive within God's love/God's being. You will never fall out of God - never - never - no matter what. Faith means that when we don't know, we can trust in the mystery of God, that the mystery is good.

    My most fervent prayers and Gods love,

    I was a nervous wreck the first time your Grandma brought you to my Pre-School class with your feeding tube attached & an extra one in case that one came out. If this occured I was to call 911 and then your Mom, fortunately that never happened. You always had a piece of Beef Jerky to chew on since you couldn't eat very much.. I soon found out you were a very tough little guy. I can't believe that Jesus has brought you this far to let you down now. You are in our thoughts & prayers.

  33. I'm sad and am hoping and praying for little Jace. I know what it's like to have a child, a baby, fighting for his life in the hospital. Jace is a strong little guy and he will pull through because underdogs always do.

    Your picture reminded me so much of my son after his open heart surgery. I want to give Jace a little hug and tell him to stay strong because his foster mom and auntie are waiting for him and they have a lot of love to give.

    I really hope that the investigation goes well and your family finds out what happened and if there is a guilty party, I hope that the law works and actually takes care of the perpetrator and give him/her what he/she deserves.

  58. Little Jace, We, too, have fought for the life of a baby who was hurt by another. God did many miracles, and we believe in miracles, and we KNOW how much Jesus loves and will fight for you! You have been set apart and called by God from the womb, and although there is an enemy of God, He is stronger and His WORD prevails, and we declare that HIS WILL be done in your life. You have already been trained to know Him, you are one blessed little boy, and you will be part of another miracle, that God will be glorified through your life.

Love Lifted Jace and he was healed of all his infirmities because Burgess Love gave you all you needed. You not only came off of the ventilator, you came off of oxygen after you turned one. 111. I too work for Family Support in MO. I just do medicaid. But, I work in a hospital and see poor little babies just like Jace. I have found that God does punishes the abuser. In ways we will never know. If the abuser is sent to prison, his/her life is forfeit. Guys in prison for other grimes will not let live some who has abused a child like Jace was abused. They will pay, trust God for that, they will pay.

I KNOW He is listening and He cares for you and loves you so very much! I have a precious little grandaughter who started out very tiny with lots of problems like you and the doctors said she wouldn't live, but let me tell you - after many many days and nights in the hospital our God said it is time to heal her body and she is going to be 5 years old next month! Jace, Jesus loves you, this I know! I love you, sweet boy. Tell your family to stay close by you and to keep praying and for all of you to expect a miracle! Our God is good - all the time! I'll keep praying for you, sweetie! GG:)

  149. A prayer for Jace:

    Father God we believe in You, we trust in You. We know you have the healing power needed to restore Jace. Lord God, You have provided one miracle in allowing Jace to live until now and we believe You are providing another miracle in restoring Jace now. Lord, with the power that healed Peter's mother-in-law; the power that healed Jairus's daughter; the power that brought Lazarus back to life and the power that raised Your son Jesus from the dead on the third day; with that same power reach down and heal Jace! We believe in Your power to heal Lord! So we ask for healing for Jace! In the name of your Son Jesus Christ we pray this! Amen.

The way Jen smiled when recalling memories of Jace and things he said and his personality- it showed me that this little boy really had influenced MANY MANY lives, adult and children both. Since then Jace & family have been in our prayers. My 9yr. old daughter is especially concerned, she heard how the injuries happened. You have been in our thoughts and prayers and will continue to be. I don't even know you, but I am SO ANGRY and mad that this could happen to such an innocent child. 4 I long to dwell in your tent forever
    and take refuge in the shelter of your wings.

  180. I am so sorry for your loss. I have two children of God. Both whom are Special angels my David was 26 years old on June 5th and he was not supposed to live past 5 years old according to the doctors but God had other plans. I cried for your family as I read this. No should ever have to go thru what you are. Praying for you all.

  181. I may be opening a can of worms here, and it may have already been posted (because I did not read thru all the posts), but please pray for the person who did this. Obviously they are in need of the Lord. Watch over this person dear God, and bring them someone who can tell of Your salvation, Your hope, Your healing. In Jesus Christ's Name, Amen.

  182. Two years ago our town had a very similar death of a 3-year old boy, Aadon, and is still recovering from it. The grandmother of the child is now working hard at raising child abuse awareness in our surrounding communities. I am sharing their website link with you, perhaps you may find some comfort in it. Perhaps Aadon and Jace are playing together now in Heaven. Prayers for you and your sister as you get through this. You are not alone in your grief.

  183. Sweet Sweet little Jace. May Jesus comfort you in His arms. May Jesus comfort your mom with the precious love and grace and strength of the Holy Spirit. Praying for your family.

    I never had the joy of knowing you on this earth, but I will get to meet you one day "just over the hillside". Please know I'm thinking and praying for you and your family. Until we all meet again...MB

  185. You don't know me. But, still my heart is broken for you. Praying for the peace of the Holy Spirit to wrap around you. Nothing makes since right now. It probably never will. There are no words that can possibly comfort you. Please know we are so sorry for the loss of your sweet boy.

  186. I didn't have the pleasure of meeting Jace face to face but heard lots of wonderful updates on facebook. I am so in shock as today is the first I have heard of this tragedy and I so hurt for you and all of your family. I will pray for healing of hurts that run so deep. I believe God will give you the strength when you don't feel you can move forward. Your family has always been so special to me! I want to do whatever I can to help. Lots of Love! 187. Our family has been through this horrific ordeal ourselves. My cousin, 2 years old, was beaten with a wooden suit coat hanger 3 years ago this July. She was the light of our lives and did not deserve this, but through our grief we donated her organs so that other families would not have to experience the pain, hurt, and yes ANGER of losing their precious child. Through her organ donations 5 other children were spared and she lives on within each of them. TO THE FAMILY: your aching hearts will ease in pain, but will never quite heal completely. But know your selfless gift WILL make it easier to bear the burden of your loss. MAY GOD BLESS EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU WITH HIS LOVING ARMS TO EASE YOUR PAIN AND MAY YOU FIND THE PEACE THAT YOU SO LOVINGLY DESERVE!!!
